Hiring the Hall

The Hall is available for hire for parties and functions by contacting the Booking Clerk on
07983-742784, or by e-mailing Enquiries

Available dates and times can be checked prior to telephoning. (See Availability.)

The Clerk will then make a provisional booking and send out a Hiring Agreement. You confirm your booking by returning the signed form with the requested fee. This may be the full hire cost, or just a booking deposit, depending on how far in advance the Hall is booked.
We also ask for an amount which we hold against damage, any additional cleaning that may be required, and the safe return of the keys. This can be paid with the booking fee but may be paid in cash on the day of the booking. This money will be returned to you following the safe return of the keys and confirmation that the Hall has been left as found.
When calculating how much time to book please include the time for setting up your event, and most importantly clearing up and cleaning the Hall after your event.

Alcohol.

The Hall itself is not licensed for the sale or provision of alcohol. If you are going to have alcohol at all at your event and are are not sure if you need to get a licence, now called a ‘Temporary Event Notice’, then talk to the the helpful people at South Norfolk Council on 01508 533633.
There are a number of local publicans that can provide a bar for events. Both Buffy’s Brewery and Kevin Greenacre of the Gissing Crown have supplied bars in the past at our hall.

Rates

The layout of the Hall makes it difficult for separate groups to use the small meeting room and the main hall at the same time therefore  we always hire the Hall as a whole, regardless of which area is required.

Currently our rates are as follows

Occasional Hire £9.50 per hour

Regular Hire (6 or more per year) £8.50 per hour

We offer a futher discount on these rates for charities  (deduct £1.50) and for children’s organisations (deduct £1.50). Thus a charity children’s organisation with a regular hire would pay £5.50 per hour.

We also offer special rates for daytime hire by Businesses, of just £7.50 per hour, with a limited term special offer of £28 for a 4-hour morning or afternoon session, a saving of £10 on our normal rates.

If you wish to have access to the bar area of the Hall there is a surcharge of £10 per event.

Numbers

The maximum number of people allowed in the Hall is 220, this is standing or close seating (theatre style). If seated around tables the maximum is 150.

Parties

Unfortunately a minority of hirers, generally from outside the village, have been acting irresponsibly. There has been riotous behaviour, to the extent that neighbours have felt the need to call the police, and the Hall has been left unclean and with broken equipment, in a condition entirely unacceptable for other hirers. This imposes a burden on the (unpaid) committee, and extra costs on the Hall, and can only lead to higher prices for everyone, or, in extreme circumstances, to the closure of the Hall.

If this were to continue, the Village Hall would cease to be an asset for the village, and it is for this reason that the committee, with some regret, feel obliged to impose some restrictions on parties. Hiring of the Hall has always been, and remains, at the sole discretion of the committee, and the committee reserves the right, in any circumstance it sees fit:

  • to ask potential hirers for references from one or more known responsible villagers
  • to ask for a bond of up to £500, as guarantee of good behaviour
  • ultimately, to refuse to hire the hall if they are not satisfied as to the suitability of the proposed event and/or the likely good behaviour of the aspirant hirer(s)

If you are a responsible hirer, you will not be affected by this: our terms and conditions are unchanged, and our rates remain as they have been for the past three years. Please, though, be patient with us as we try to protect the investment that the village has in the Hall.
